Even
before your baby’s teeth erupt, you
can start encouraging good oral health
care by routinely wiping the gums with a
moist gauze pad or cloth after feeding
or at bedtime.
Once the teeth erupt, it’s time to
introduce a soft-bristled toothbrush.
Daily brushing is particularly important
now because even your baby’s first
tooth is a target for plaque build-up.
Regular brushing will break up plaque
and interrupt the process of tooth
decay.
An early start in oral care is also
important for children with special
healthcare needs. Special needs children
may be at greater risk for oral disease
because of altered diet and feeding
patterns, inability to access dental
care, frequently needed sweetened
medications.
